Heart of Operations

Leadership with heart. Operations with purpose.

Executive Profile

Scott M. North has held senior operating roles across four decades of multi-unit grocery and specialty retail, including Chief Operating Officer at Lucky’s Markets, Senior Vice President of Operations at Sprouts Farmers Market, and Zone Vice President at The Fresh Market.

He has directed operations spanning 225+ locations, 18,000 associates, and $3.6B in annual revenue, and carried the field organization through a NASDAQ initial public offering and a $1.2B cross-border acquisition. He founded Heart of Operations in 2024 and advises operators nationwide from Tampa, Florida.

I have spent more than forty years in the operating seat, not advising from the outside, but leading on the floor where real value is created.

My career was forged in the fast-paced world of multi-unit grocery and specialty retail. Over that time I have navigated virtually every complex corporate lifecycle event an enterprise can face. That has meant:

  • Scaling businesses from the ground up
  • Leading multi-unit expansion
  • Navigating restructurings and major change
  • Turning around distressed operations
  • Developing stronger leaders and deeper teams
  • Operating through major corporate milestones, from a public listing to a billion-dollar acquisition

Having overseen operations spanning 225+ locations, 18,000 associates, and $3.6B in annual revenue, I bring battle-tested clarity to organizations at any stage of their growth.

The size of the business may be different, but the challenges are often familiar. Growth creates complexity. Roles become less clear. Communication gets harder. Leadership gets stretched. Good people can work incredibly hard and still find themselves moving in different directions.

Today, through Heart of Operations, I bring that same executive-level clarity to both expanding retail brands and growing small-to-midsize businesses across industries. Whether elevating the Customer & Store Experience in specialty grocery or building Operational Strategy, Culture, and Leadership Frameworks for founder-led and service-based companies, the mission is the same: eliminate organizational friction, build high-accountability teams, and create businesses that execute flawlessly.

How I work & influence outcomes

Great operations are not built on rigid control. They are powered by clarity, respect, and servant leadership. At the core of how I operate is a conviction that bridges life and business.

Rule #2Love thy neighbor.

In an operational setting, choosing to lead with love means treating team members with dignity, establishing clear expectations, and equipping people to succeed. It does not mean lowering standards or avoiding accountability. In my experience, the opposite is true. When people understand what is expected of them, know they are respected, and have the tools to do their jobs well, they are far more likely to take ownership.

When leaders show up with empathy, clarity, and genuine care, frontline teams thrive, operational execution sharpens, and sustainable profitability follows. High-performing business systems don’t replace love; they are powered by it.

Leave things better than you found them

At the heart of what I do is a simple belief: leave things better than you found them. Better leaders. Stronger teams. Healthier cultures. Better operations.

I bring the experience, perspective, and energy to help make that happen, and I genuinely enjoy helping people find a better way forward. If I can leave your organization stronger, your people more confident, and your future brighter, then the work was worth doing.

Say hello.
